Pretty much all of us have had the past bring itself up one way or another, either through embarrassing memories, people or other circumstances - sometimes right before sleep... but I bet we can all agree that the past holds a lot of importance in our lives. It controls who we are, it controls our nostalgia, you could even argue it controls what will happen to us, if you are into that kinda thought.
But... have you ever thought about yourself in the present? What do you think about how your current actions shape who you are going to be? How reading this might give you an idea of something to do... or keep procrastinating. I do the same a lot. Or even how your current actions are different or similar to the past - what did you change about yourself or your enviroment that changed your life a tiny bit?
In some views, the future might not look too bright... but do you hold hope for it? Do you still think about your goals and dreams? Even behind the objective decay of soul? What about changes in the future - like your favourite things disappearing one day...
I feel like it is important to say that the past, present and future have some sort of linked effect on each other - you hold one above the other when the 'other' doesn't look very nice. Nostalgia is a great example for this - the current world or its state in the future don't really fit what some people want it to look like. In other words: Life is unfair. I mean, obviously - with that outta the way, for me, it adds sense behind the point of nostalgia. When you don't wanna be in the present, mainly to avoid something going wrong or traumatic, you return to the past to where everything seemed to be safer... even if it might be through rose-tinted goggles. I'm gonna be honest here, I never lived through 2002. I just liked how everything looked back then - which is why I themed my site around it, but there are DEFINITELY some parts of the net back then that are better than now. Censorship... yeah you get the point.
All three of these parts of time define us: who we were, who we are and who we are going to be. The now side of things might look shitty, but why make the future shitty? Why not make it a celebration, through music, stories, whatever else - you can always change. If what happened in the past and what is happening now is maybe not so good, it can be very easy to not know what to do. To dwell in who you are not. But, like, what's the point? After all, you should define you. Not someone else. However... if you're going through a bad spot in your life right now, don't let that define you. Something caused by events in the past, or even in the present, or even what might happen in the future - don't let that spiral deeper into your personality. Tell someone about it. What could be a very big change shouldn't look like an inconvenience, especially if it defines you through time. If all three of the parts of time makes you you, then staying in one of them, dwelling in that one kinda removes that sense of you. Don't worry about the past - if it is long gone. Don't worry about the future - because learning stuff is pretty synonymous with it, whether through good and bad experiences. Don't worry about the present - because you can do something about it. If you change the present, you change the past (what makes you you) and effectively also the future (what you will do to further build on yourself).
Obviously, you can visit the past and future sometimes etc. - but don't make it you. I mean, I missed some cool shit like the release of the Xbox (and Xbox 360) as well as everything up to the PS3. I didn't experience the pure trash talk of Halo and COD, and that makes me kinda sad sometimes. I didn't really use Windows 7 either until a lot later on in my life (DEFINITELY past 2009), but it's still fun seeing what it was like back then. I guess you should try to embrace who you were, who you are and who you are going to be. :]
Maybe this is too philosophical but I just wanted to write about it. If you don't agree with some of this then... yeah that's fine. But you might just find it useful... sometime in the future.
